  34. Due to minor changes, the tapes with a version number greater than 1.10
  35. cannot be recognized by GEMAR versions smaller 1.10. However, version 1.10
  36. recognizes the tapes of older versions.
  37. There will be no loss of data, they will be save on the tape. Nonetheless,
  38. such a tape must be read by new versions.

  84.     GEMAR is a shareware product, which means that GEMAR may be copied and
  85.     used freely by private users under the prerequisite that all data files
  86.     remain unchanged.

  88.     I'm sorry GEMAR has not all functions in the public Version.
  89.     In Germany most users do not pay for Shareware, so I decided to make 
  90.     differences between the registered and the public version to get those
  91.     users to pay the fee.

  93.     Persons who use GEMAR frequently, must be registered and have to pay:

  96.     1.) Registration for $ 60
  97.           A complete version of GEMAR, updates upon sending the original
  98.           disc as well as an envelope including sufficient postage - alter-
  99.           natively upon paying $ 10.

  101.     2.) Registration for $ 90
  102.           A complete version of GEMAR, three updates automatically after
  103.           publication.

  105.     Please take care for any charges for order checks, so these amounts will
  106.     arrive me!

  108.     The registered version has a few extended capabilities:

  110.      -Image-Backups of non TOS partitions (OS9, Spectre, Minix ...)
  111.      -Batch-capabilities for automation of repeating actions
  112.  
  113.      In addition, the registered user will receive a printed manual
  114.      with a detailed documentation on GEMAR.

  165.     It is possible to adjust GEMAR such, that only the commands of the
  166.     corresponding streamer will be used according to the SCSI norm.
  167.     Just in case: If the streamer does not work with GEMAR, it might be
  168.     possible for me to modify GEMAR properly. Therefore, I would need
  169.     to have the manual with the SCSI-commands.
  170.  
  171.     If a new configuration file exits which is not according to GEMAR I would
  172.     like to ask you to send me the used parameters. With this I can also
  173.     attache the right parameter file so that not everybody has to identify
  174.     his new adjustment. Basically it is sufficient to send the file
  175.     'Streamer Adjustments' as well as the 'Data Rate' and 'Max. Read' from
  176.     the file 'Backup Adjustments'.

  179. GEMAR UNDER MULTITASKING:
  180.  
  181.     Principally GEMAR works under Atari Multi-Tasking Extensions
  182.     (MiNT, MultiTOS, MultiGEM, Mag!X).
  183.     However, Backup/Restore should never be done while another process is
  184.     running.
  185.  
  186.     There are three significant reasons for that:
  187.  
  188.     1.) Speed:
  189.          All available computing power is necessary to supply
  190.          data to the streamer and simultaneously read data from the
  191.          hard disk. For this it is completely unimportant whether an ST, TT,
  192.          Falcon, or anything else is used.
  193.  
  194.     2.) Need for Storage:
  195.          In order to carry out an efficient buffering of the data, GEMAR need
  196.          quite some storage. Only this way the streamer can be fed with data.
  197.  
  198.     3.) Data Protection
  199.          If another program modifies the data on the hard disk, while GEMAR
  200.          is working, a consistent backup cannot be guaranteed.
  201.          Hence, because of reasons of data protection no other program
  202.          should be running that may save, delete, or modify files.
  203.          As soon as there is a possibility of refusing an access of other
  204.          programs while GEMAR is working, it will be implemented in GEMAR.

  207. RESTRICTIONS AND KNOWN ERRORS:
  208.  
  209.     The english version is not english at all, I'm sorry.
  210.     Some internal Strings are in german, due to the concept of MAGIC.
  211.     Never mind, they are not so hard to read.
  212.     I'm thinking about a way to transfer the internals Strings to the used 
  213.     language without changing MAGIC's concept.
  214.  
  215.     The hard disk software made by LACOM does not create Atari-compatible
  216.     partitions within version 3.2a. Therefore problems may occure during
  217.     Image-backups.
  218.    
  219.     A backup, stored at the very end of a tape can only be carried over to
  220.     another tape if the tape was saved with Quick-File-Access capabilites.
  221.  
  222.     Some users have problems with backups that have been restored with
  223.     Quick File Access (Seek). In this case the Quick File Access should be
  224.     turned off during the restore procedure. Unfortunately, until now it has
  225.     been impossible for me to reproduce this error, hence there is no
  226.     repair mechanism known to me.
  227.  
  228.     GEMAR should work with virtuall memory quite well. But I must say, that 
  229.     this memory has to be located over phystop. With OUTSIDE it's possible to 
  230.     add the virtual RAM below phystop. In this case, GEMAR's program-flags 
  231.     should be set to 'Load to TT-RAM' and 'Malloc from TT-RAM' off.
  232.  
  233.     GEMA uses TAS to check the Semaphor Flock. This Opcode may cause Problems on
  234.     some Versions of the GE-Soft HyperCache due to an error of the Hypercache.
  235.     I cannot see a way to replace this opcode so on Problems with your
  236.     HyperCache please contact GE-Soft for correction.

  258.     -several Bugfixes (TAR-Headers are correct again, disabled icons where 
  259.      selectable in GEMAR 2.01, no more crashes under MultiTOS, ...)
